This report examines US-China security cooperation before China's counter-protest of Tiananmen Square on 4 June 1989, the strategic context in which it took place, and the strategic environment of US-China relations. The author concludes that the reasons that justified the program of security cooperation with China during the Cold War are irrelevant in a post-Cold War context.
