This paper explains environmental taxes and their use in the context of existing and forthcoming UK government policy and legislation. It defines environmental - 'green' - taxes, presents the arguments for and against their introduction, and assesses the Labour government's policy on green taxation. The authors also frame such taxation with regard to climate change targets before providing proposals for the future use of green taxes.
