This paper discusses the 2009 amendment to the 1995 Act on the state language of the Slovak Republic, an amendment which introduces the primacy of the Slovak language in public life. The authors assess the provisions of the amendment with reference to minority rights and note the impact on the Slovak political scene. Furthermore, the paper examines Hungarian responses to the law before briefly suggesting possible outcomes of the dispute.
