This article reviews US President Barack Obama's 2009 visit to Saudi Arabia and the political factors underlying his choice of Egypt as the venue for an important speech. It concludes that his trip to the Middle East and the choice of Cairo as the site for a major, non-confrontational address, testify to his distancing from former policies.
