This article discusses the European Council's designated candidate for the European Commission president and the European Parliament's role to set in motion the appointment procedures. It reviews the evolution of political situation in the Parliament and at the European Council summit. It also examines legal guarantees granted to Ireland in response to the Irish people's concerns and the prospects of the Swedish Presidency for the European Commission.
