This article discusses the May 2009 military defeat of the Tamil Tigers and the end of the civil war that ravaged Sri Lanka from 1983. It explores prospects for a lasting peace that hinge on the implementation of political reforms, respect the aspirations of the Tamil minority and reflect the coexistence of various ethnic and religious groups in the country.
