This paper summarizes the proceedings of the 2006 CEPS conference on cross-border consolidation in the financial services sector. The discussions at the conference argued that the consolidation gained momentum in Europe after the large acquisitions in UK, Italy and Germany and the race to acquire key banking institutions in the new member states. The conference concluded that pan-European financial groups emerge.
