This commentary examines the growing importance of selected large companies linked with the ruling elite following their takeover of strategic energy assets since autumn 2008. The author uses the expansion of companies controlled by Gennady Timchenko as illustrative of this process. He outlines the origins of Timchenko's business before assessing what has made it so successful.
