This publication compare the attitudes of both economists and politicians towards free international trade. The authors argue that economists tend to exalt the virtues of free trade because they focus on efficiency, while politicians are more skeptical because they mainly worry about the income distribution effects of trade liberalization. They conclude that political decisionmakers refrain from sweeping market liberalization once efficiency is not the only relevant concern.
