This article draws attention to the political developments in São Tomé e Príncipe that formed the background to the coup of 16 July 2003. It focuses on the increasing regional and international importance of the country as an oil producer, the role of rebels in the country's prolonged social and economic crisis, and the political negotiations involved in resolving the political crisis.
