This paper provides an overview of aspects of the social dynamics of the criminal economy on the Cape Flats. It contends that organized crime has damaging implications and that the traditional analysis of the social impact of organized crime has tended to be simplistic. The author argues that the criminal economy is substantial, blurs economic and social activities, involves thousands of people, and serves as a core dimension of the community.
