The end of 2009 saw a clear intensification of efforts around the two pipeline projects vital for Russian energy strategy, the Nord Stream gas pipeline running from Russia to Germany via the Baltic Sea, and the South Stream gas pipeline running from Russia to Central and Southern Europe via the Black Sea and the Balkans.
