Immediately after the Cold War, observers anticipated that a new partnership, or even quasi-alliance, would replace the conflictual relationship between the Soviet Union and the United States. However, growing nationalism and anti-Western sentiments in Russia and increasing US distrust of Russian motives and intentions have dashed these hopes. The past few years have seen growing differences between Moscow and Washington over many issues: the former Yugoslavia, NATO expansion, and arms sales to Iran and other countries.
