On 17th September 2009, U.S. President Barack Obama announced that the Pentagon would be canceling the plan to deploy assets of its global missile defense system in Europe to counter the growing long-range missile threat from Iran. Obama’s cancellation of the proposed ‘third site’ in Poland and the Czech Republic – so called because it was designed to complement and add to the missile defense assets already fielded in Alaska and California – has been widely viewed as a significant transformation in U.S. ballistic missile defense policy.
