This report overviews the key arms control and nonproliferation agreements and initiatives of the past 40 years. The authors 1) describe arms control efforts between the US and the states of the former Soviet Union, covering both formal, bilateral treaties, and the cooperative threat reduction process; 2) describe multilateral nuclear nonproliferation efforts, covering both formal treaties and less formal accommodations that have been initiated in recent years; and 3) review treaties and agreements that address chemical, biological, and conventional weapons.
