Today we face a global water crisis. Widespread water shortages are predicted not only in the Southern Hemisphere but also in the North. Already, despite a large increase in water use over the last century, as many as 1.4 billion people - one out of five - lack access to clean drinking water, and 2.6 billion - almost 40 percent of the world's population - lack sanitation facilities.
