Conventional security threats have receded in Latin America since the end of the Cold War, but unconventional threats—namely organized crime, drug trafficking, and their attendant violence—have come to the forefront of the regional agenda. In this monograph, the author examines the evolving regional security landscape by exploring the relationship between crime, violence, and state institutions in Guatemala.
