The world is very likely to experience a range of adverse climate change impacts in the coming decades and ocean iron fertilization is discussed as one measure to contribute to the mitigation of these impacts. But its utilization is currently highly debated and its mitigation potential is not yet explored well enough. The controversy about the utilization of ocean iron fertilization is based on the fact that its effects, including intended and unintended ones, are not yet fully understood. Still, there are vital commercial interests that favour this method in order to sequester CO2, generate carbon offsets and sell these offsets on carbon markets.
