Article 5 of the Washington Treaty stipulates that an armed attack on one is an attack on all - and that the parties will take such action as deemed necessary to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic Area. It has been reiterated time and again that this commitment to collective defence is the bedrock of NATO.
