The "Greek Sickness" and the parlous financial situation of the southern EU member states have prompted suggestions that the EU has reached the end of its tether. Such arguments increasingly assign an important role to the purported differences between the various European cultures, and contrast the undisciplined and profligate south with the reform-orientated and frugal Germanic north. How does the new flexible and Slav-dominated east of Europe fit into this scheme?
