This paper analyzes the US military deployment in Haiti after the earthquake of 12 January 2010, which caused catastrophic damage in the poorest country in the Americas. At Haiti’s request, the US took the lead in directing rescue operations and coordinating an aid campaign with the UN and the international community. The US also had its own reasons for coming to the rescue of the Haitian people. However, its military deployment has not been without criticism inside and outside the region.
