This paper addresses the likely consequences for the region of an Iran with nuclear weapons. Starting in the 1970s, Iran developed a deep interest in nuclear power, which it steadfastly maintained was exclusively for peaceful purposes. It became increasingly clear that Iran was interested in mastering the full fuel cycle—especially uranium enrichment—and, moreover, had taken impressive steps to realize this ambition.
