One of the most significant developments in the African peace operations context is the initiative to establish an African Standby Force (ASF). It is significant because, for the first time, Africa now has a common position and action plan for the development of its peace operations capacity. This book is about the civilian dimension of peace operations. It is a summary of the work that the AU Peace Support Operations Division (PSOD) has done to date to develop the civilian dimension of AU peace operations, primarily through the development of the ASF.
