This paper analyzes how and why Arab states are striving to ramp up their indigenous armaments production capabilities. The text specifically look at 1) the proliferation of post-Cold War defense spending in the MENA region; 2) why Arab states’ domestic defense production efforts failed in the past but might succeed in the future; 3) the specific attempts by Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to build up their defense industries; and 4) the smaller, more recent forays by other MENA states, such as Jordan, Kuwait and Qatar, to accomplish the same end.
