This Elcano Analysis compares the currency war that began in 2010 with that of the 1930s and explains the relationship between competitive devaluations and protectionism. It then examines the domestic political factors that explain the positions of major countries with regard to exchange rates. Finally, it evaluates the various coordination proposals that have been presented, including those aimed at getting China to change its position
