In this Bulletin, the author explains why the re-election of Okinawa's Governor Horikazu Nakaima does not automatically bode well for the transfer of the US Marine Corps Air Station to a new location on the island. The author also notes that in turn, this will present significant challenges for Tokyo and Washington in identifying ways to deepen the US-Japan alliance.
