This publication is a transcript of Abraham Lincoln's famous speech, delivered on June 16, 1858 in Springfield, Illinois. In his speech, Lincoln argues that the US must become either a nation composed entirely of slaves or with all members of society free. He thus argued against the idea that the North and South could hold different positions on slavery, a belief he argued would paralyze the United States as a functioning Union.
