The Good Friday Agreement was a peace deal approved on May 23, 1998 between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The agreement accommodates a complex series of provisions pertaining to building a sustainable peace. These include: the future status and system of government within Northern Ireland; the relationship between Northern Ireland and institutions in both the Republic of Ireland and the UK; the decommissioning of arms held by the various paramilitary groups and the release of members of paramilitary groups from prison.
