At the dawn of the 21st century, the US faces a broad and complex array of challenges to its national security. Just as America helped to determine the course of the 20th century, it must now build on the sources of American strength and influence, and shape an international order capable of overcoming the challenges of the 21st century. The national security strategy is therefore focused on renewing American leadership so that the US can more effectively advance its interests in the 21st century.
