In the context of the deep crisis that engulfed Europe in 2010, this paper looks at the major long-term political and economic trends and priorities which will affect how the EU operates in 2011/12. The three broad areas of concern are Europe's political economy, Europe's role in the world and the quality of EU governance after the Lisbon Treaty enters into force. The paper also examines the likelihood of changes to the EU's emerging agenda taking into account the risks and uncertainties that might derail it.
