In this paper, the authors argue that events in Tunisia in late 2010 and early 2011 raise sharp questions regarding the country's current situation and its future prospects. More generally, the often taken-for-granted sustainability of many regimes of the Middle East and the policies of the EU towards the region need to be re-examined.
