This largely qualitative study focuses on Bangladesh following the installation of democratic government in 1991. The paper highlights the importance of tailoring counterterrorism initiatives to the specific contexts in which they emerge and develop. It argues that the threats of terrorism and militancy, or violent religious extremism, in Bangladesh are best understood in relation to the political and socioeconomic challenges confronting the country.
