This paper provides a summary of the 38th IPI Vienna Seminar, “Coping with Crisis in Africa: Strengthening Multilateral Capacity for Peace and Security”, which was held in June 2008. Experts and policymakers from across the African continent, convened to examine contemporary peace and security challenges on the African continent. At a time of overlapping and worsening crises throughout Africa, participants focused on identifying policy areas of acute relevance to African peace and security. They also took a hard look at gaps, inconsistencies, and contradictions in multilateral response capabilities and strategies, both within the UN system and among key regional and sub-regional partners
