The question of whether mediation can contribute to the long-term transformation of societies seeking to end violent internal conflicts is of great interest and concern to mediators. This paper argues that mediators do not need to "choose" between ending conflicts and transforming societies. Mediators can contribute to long-term transformation without crowding negotiations with a vast array of development, and institution-building, issues. There is no doubt that only so much can, or should, be squeezed into a mediation process.
