India has clearly demonstrated not only that it has extensive interests in Africa, but that it is willing to invest significant amounts of human, political, and material capital in order to advance those interests. In recent years the nature of the engagement has changed through the expansion of India’s commercial and economic relations with Africa and its growing cooperation in the energy sector. By and large, the goals of Indian engagements in Africa and the means by which it has pursued them are not opposed to American strategic objectives in Africa.
