This policy brief uses lessons learned from the counter-insurgency campaign in Iraq to look at the role and function as well as the challenge of outsourcing military functions to private companies. It concludes that while private military companies take over some of the burden, relieving soldiers from non-military tasks, lessons from Iraq show that the overall military strategy must be ensured for this arrangement to be effective.
