This paper examines the drastic expansion of the Egyptian military’s civil economic activities since it toppled the Morsi regime in July 2013. While the current government has promised to reduce the military’s economic role in the coming years, the author believes that strong market positions, established privileges, and historically ingrained structures make such a change unlikely.
