This paper attempts to explain the transformation of what used to be a primarily Chechen freedom struggle into a collection of mini-insurgencies engulfing almost all of the North Caucasian republics. It also will demonstrate how the originally decentralized Chechen war effort underwent a protracted process of Islamization that paved the way for the establishment of the so-called Caucasus Emirate.
