A real power shift in Egypt is practically impossible – the authoritarian power structures are too entrenched, the opposition too weak and divided and the pressures from the outside too insignificant. With or without ElBaradei, Mubarak’s reign will soon be over, so the West, with great stakes in Egypt as a regional power hub, would be well advised to forge new alliances.
