In September 2010, the opposition was presented for the first time as a credible alternative to Chavism, which emerged weakened from the parliamentary elections. Looking ahead to 2012 and a possible re-election of the president, two potential scenarios lie on the horizon: either more authoritarianism and political polarization, or the decline of the Bolivarian project and the emergence of an electoral alternative.
