This essay reviews the general nanotechnology regulatory paralysis in the US, and highlights a few risks that could result in public health and environmental harm if that paralysis continues. The author then gives an overview of the state of US agri-nanotechnology regulation, and examines the nano-coating of fruits and vegetables to retain moisture and retard spoilage. Finally, the paper briefly considers how the Codex Alimentarius Commission, the international food standards organization, might develop standards for Engineered Nanotechnology Materials in nano-coatings.
