This monograph looks at military history from ancient times through to present day. He argues that, for the most part, there has been a steady escalation from primitive, indirect, low-casualty conflict to massive total wars in the 20th century. Now, instead of a new era of war, we have returned to something akin to primitive warfare, with ritual and restraint now as important as objective standards.
