German security policy has undergone a fundamental change since reunification. Nonetheless, some traditional elements of Germany’s strategic culture have been adapted to the new circumstances. They include a focus on NATO as a pillar of European defence and a vehicle for sustaining a Western community of values, including the transatlantic link binding Europe with the US; a multilateral approach to solving security issues, with specific attachment to the role of the United Nations in crisis management; and, above all, military restraint.
