Unhindered climate change implies the risk of catastrophic damage to society. Quantifying of this risk is complicated or even impossible due to our still limited understanding of the earth’s climate system and in particular to the presence of tipping points in the climate system. Exceeding thresholds corresponding to such tipping points might involve sharp and non-linear changes in climate dynamics, determined intrinsically by the climate system and the feedback mechanisms involved. I investigate the optimal role of carbon sequestration for mitigation in the presence of a ceiling on atmospheric carbon concentration.
