Mainly as a consequence of its military commitments in Afghanistan and Iraq, Australia has built strong defense ties in the Persian Gulf, particularly with the UAE. This paper proposes a number of cost-effective ways for Australia to preserve key security relationships with Gulf partners in coming years to help protect and advance its broader interests in the region.
