The author reviews the military's role in Vietnamese politics from 2001 to the present. Analyzing civil-military relations in Vietnam he argues that, while the military's role has undergone some significant adjustments, it's overall influence on politics and society has remained a steady state. He also highlights crucial changes in military-party relations as economic development and national security concerns have become intertwined.
