This paper summarizes the discussion among Australian policy makers on the strategic nature of China's role in the Asia-Pacific region and internationally. It discusses whether the rise of China is a threat to Western interests in the Asia-Pacific, or simply a power trying to defend its sovereign interests in world moving away from European/North American hegemony. The paper states that Australian politicians are largely divided on this issue.
