Many Asian and African polities, among them Pakistan, entered into alliances with the two main superpowers of the post-Second World War era – the US and the Soviet Union – in the hope of getting economic and military aid. The alliances, the author argues, placed Pakistan in a relationship of dependency vis-a-vis its patrons. This paper examines the implications and ramifications of such dependency for Pakistan.
