Since Danish-Swedish relations have recently become more contentious, the aim of the paper is to explore this rift in order to pursue broader questions about the relationship between two countries that have been historically similar to each other. Does the crux of the issue consist of similarity having turned too intimate and therefore intolerable, or are Denmark and Sweden instead beginning to slide apart? The paper's findings are finally placed in a broader IR-perspective, particularly when it comes to using democracy and liberal values in the ordering of political space.
