This roundtable report summarizes the proceedings of the SDA's October 2004 conference on European maritime security. The attendees discuss the value of naval capabilities in 21st century Europe; the importance of maritime security for the European Security Strategy; and the role of NATO in achieving naval security. The panelists also consider whether Europe has adequately responded to threats such as drug and migrant smuggling, piracy, and terrorism, and the respective roles played by governments, port authorities, and business.
